A presidiária Maria do Socorro Nobre, detida numa cadeia de Salvador, Bahia, mantém uma surpreendente correspondência com o artista plástico Franz Krajcberg, um sobrevivente do Holocausto preocupado com a sobrevivência da Natureza. Nas cartas, ela exprime suas expectativas de liberdade e de construção de uma nova vida após cumprir sua pena.
O curta-metragem colhe os depoimentos de vida e registra o primeiro encontro dessas duas pessoas tão diferentes que acabaram por estabelecer uma relação de amizade.
A personagem Socorro Nobre inspirou Walter Salles no argumento do longa Central do Brasil, no qual ela é a primeira personagem a surgir na tela.
